What is diabetes?

Diabetes is the world’s fastest-growing chronic condition, affecting more than 425 million adults worldwide*. By 2045, this number will rise to 629 million*. Millions of children have diabetes too.

Type 1 diabetes is caused by the body’s inability to produce insulin. Type 2 diabetes means that the body does not respond to insulin as it should. Insulin is needed for regulating blood glucose levels, especially when eating, drinking and exercising. Without insulin, blood glucose rises to unhealthy levels.

With the diabetes treatments available today, and by closely monitoring the condition, it is possible for diabetics to live life free of the health complications caused by sustained high blood glucose levels. These complications – which include problems with the kidneys, eyes and nerves – can be serious, so diabetics and their caregivers need to ensure treatment plans are adhered to.
